What finish is best on a potato and onion bin?

I found a nice potato and onion bin but there is no finish on it (i.e. hasn't been varnished or stained). Can I use the bin to put potatoes and onions if there is no finish on the wood? If not, what type of finish is best for a potato and onion bin?
