Differences between former British colonies, why?

Australia, Canada, and the United States, all former British colonies, and all thriving, wealthy nations. But many other former British colonies have not fared so well. Why have these three prospered while today Africa and the Middle East are afflicted with war, disease, and poverty? Did this happen because of different methods of decolonization, because of more effective post-colonial government, or for some other reason?
